Great question. While I wouldn't say that they carry more weight, I will say that they get more attention. A referral means that when it's time for the hiring team to start screening applicants, a referral is one of the applicants who gets the first look. So as long as you've positioned yourself on your resume as a strong candidate who aligns with the requirements and expectations (ie your experiences, strengths, and skills), then you would get greater consideration than someone with a similar background who came in without a referral.
