There is an opening that is an ideal fit, any tips for how to get my résumé noticed or things to avoid?

The best resumes are the ones that contain details about your career experiences that align with the needs of the role being applied to. Your resume doesn't have to be fancy, a simple format does the job! My trick is to print out a job posting, and then go through it bullet point by bullet point. For each point, I think about what skills (both hard and soft) are required, note them, and then think about an example from my experiences that connect to them to support that I actually have the skills required (super helpful for when it's time to interview as well!). When that is all done, then I have a good idea of the most relevant skills and experiences the company needs that should be focused on in my resume.
